The finalists selected for Science and Sustainability Award 2024–25 are recognising alumni who have distinguished themselves through their career and achievements in the world of science and sustainability, and who can demonstrate the impact and scale of their achievements in their profession, and beyond.

Chul Kim

Chul Kim (London School of Economics and Political Science, University College London) *Chevening

Director of Balanced Development Promotion Division, Ministry of the Interior and Safety

Chul spearheaded the successful Hometown Love Donation Program, securing nearly KRW 100 billion for local economies. He led regional innovation reforms at the Presidential Committee and spearheaded the development of K-VoM, the world's first AI-based voice phishing detection model, recognised by the OECD for its innovation. Awarded the Order of Service Merit for his contributions to national development.

Joungho Park

Joungho Park (Imperial College London)

Principal researcher, Korea Institute of Energy Research

Dr Park develops and commercialises CCUS and green hydrogen technologies. He has successfully transferred technologies to leading companies (SK Materials and SCT Engineering) and published extensively in top journals. He is passionate about education, creating VR-based engineering programs and authoring popular science books like 'I Am a Plant Engineer' to promote sustainability. 

Seungman Ha

Seungman Ha (University of Strathclyde)

Principal Surveyor, Korean Register; Environmental Policy Expert, the International Maritime Organization (IMO)

Dr Ha is the first Korean to receive the Denny Medal twice from IMarEST, he has significantly contributed to IMO policies, including GHG reduction regulations and sustainable marine fuels. He chairs the ACS Environmental Working Group and he actively supports the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries in international decarbonisation efforts, including the Korea-U.S. Green Shipping Corridor.
