The British Council allows me to learn the language itself, to meet people with various age and job and to use my spare time efficiently.
“Mom, I’m bored”
“If you are bored, study!”
“I knew you would say that.”
When I was in elementary school, this was the conversation I had with my mom when I would come back home, tired from playing. I asked her why she would always tell me to study when I said I was bored but my mom would always reply, “I wish I can study all day. That’s the easiest thing in the world…” Back then, I couldn’t understand her, and I thought she only said that to make me study. But now, I’m paying with my own money to study. HAHAHA
For me, English was an alien language while I was in the elementary school. It was something that I didn’t want to learn if someone put a knife to my throat when I was in the middle school. It was a course that my favourite teacher taught when I was in the high school. It was a mandatory criterion I had to study for in order to get a job when I was in the university. It was a stress-reliever when I started working. But now, it’s the single most important thing in my life.
I didn’t work for 6-7 years since I had quit my first job and I needed to start on my second job. I decided that a lecturer would be great in terms of balance between my work and my family. I began to study English again, but I never thought that this was the beginning of a nightmare.
The world has changed so much. A lot of people have studied abroad, allowing those students to be able to speak English better than teachers in academies and schools. I wanted to improve myself and decided to go to graduate school. I never thought that it would be this hard to study while taking care of my children and working at the same time. 10 years passed quickly and the second slump came.
The problem was the internet and smartphone. I realized that people were able to communicate with people from all around the world within seconds, and I was one of those who weren’t able to fully use the Internet. I was ashamed of myself. I didn’t know what to do as I didn’t have enough time to study due to my working hours. I somehow remembered an institution my friend told me about, “British Council”. I booked my level test in Gangnam Centre.
That was January, 2015. Now it’s 2017.
I’ve been going to classes every single day. I’m a long distance runner. Once I put my mind in to it, I never stop until I’m satisfied. The British Council allows me to learn the language itself. It allows me to meet people with various age and job. It allows me to use my spare time efficiently. I may recall back on my memories when I grow old to become a grandmother saying, “When I was young, I used to go to British Council Gangnam Centre…”
